  Plan on Grasshoppers Again

They'lllll beeee baaccccck!  Large areas of rangeland in the western half of Nebraska are at high risk Grasshopper nymph on blade of grassfor serious grasshopper infestations this summer.  Ranchers in these high risk areas should be prepared to monitor the build-up of grasshopper densities during the hatching and early development periods from mid-May through June, said Bob Wright, entomologist in the university's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The high risk category is based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service's 2009 grasshopper prediction map (JPEG, 1.5 MB, smaller image on full grasshopper article).

Rangeland Carbon Credits...Getting Started (PDF, 8 pg, 360 KB)

Carbon credits are an agreement between you and aggregates that you will have a certain amount of "green" or grass that will sequester carbon. Carbon credits are available for rangeland, no-till (includes alfalfa), seeded area, and tree plantings. Carbon credits are voluntary, but a legal, binding document. Carbon credits are a live market, so the price fluctuates. You need 3 documents to get started: 1) Ranch narrative (PDF, 4 pg, 103 KB), 2) Number of acres, and 3) Grazing Records.  Companies buying carbon credits include: SunOne Solutions (402.817.4317), AgraGate (1.866.633.6758), National Farmers Union (1.800.347.1961), and Dogwood (1.88.829.0084).  Other companies may be selling rangeland carbon credits, but these are the companies we know of for central Nebraska.  Need help getting started on your grassland carbon credit application? Call the CSA Extension Office for one-on-one assistance.
